Navigating heat during a summer senior portrait session can be challenging, but with proper planning and preparation, you can absolutely rock your session, despite the heat!
- I always schedule your session strategically: Sessions are planned late in the day. We'll get to take advantage of the beautiful light but also cooler temperatures. We will definately avoid midday when the sun is at its peak and temperatures are usually the hottest, and not so pretty.
- We will be shooting in appropriate locations such as shaded areas or locations that provide natural relief from the sun, such as parks with plenty of trees, covered walkways, or urban areas with tall buildings that cast shadows. I still do love beautiful sunlit images but those will be later in the day, or just for a few minutes. We also only shoot an outfit for about 20 minutes, so you'll get plenty of opps to cool off with some A/C.
- Dress comfortably: I know this sounds counter intuitive, however I have had seniors come out in sweaters when it's 90 and skimmpy rompers when it's 30 degrees. I encourage you to dress for the season. Choose lightweight and breathable clothing. Opt for light-colored fabrics that reflect sunlight instead of absorbing it. Avoid heavy clothing that will trap heat.
- Stay hydrated. I will have water for you during your session but you are welcome and encourage to bring things to get thru your shoot as well. Bring a small cooler with chilled water bottles or ice packs that will cool you down quickly.
- We will take frequent breaks: Plan for regular breaks in shaded areas to allow everyone to cool down and rest. This will prevent exhaustion and help maintain energy levels throughout the session.
- Yes, the summer gets hot but it is completely manageable and I've had some of my very best session in crazy heat. It is so important to dress appropriately and be prepapred!
